Licensed vs. Unlicensed Plumbers

March 20, 2017 By Mark

Licensed vs. Unlicensed Plumbers

In any plumbing problems, of course, the first thing that will come out in your mind is to get some help from the licensed plumbers because they are the experts in this field. There are some plumbing problems that a novice can actually fix but of course, when the plumbing problem becomes more serious it is a requirement to call an expert because they have more knowledge than a novice.

People who are experiencing plumbing problems most of the time think that they can actually fix it, having little knowledge and a wrench. But even though they aren’t capable of doing it, because they think that that there are tutorial videos that they can watch and learn for them to fix the problem, or maybe if they are looking for a cheaper price plumber and they are being caught by the cheaper price of the unlicensed plumber.

Unlicensed

When you hire an unlicensed plumber the only good thing in this is that it is cheaper than the licensed, of course most people wants to save money that is why they are taking the risk as long as they can save a huge amount of money, but the real score is that you are taking the risk of your health and you are just wasting money, if you hire the unlicensed one, how sure are you that they are capable of doing that certain problem? And they are not insured, in the case of any negligence happen on their side it is your liability and sometimes the unlicensed plumber is the scammers.

Licensed

Licensed plumbers maybe a little more expensive because they are licensed, you pay for their service and they can assure you that your problem can be fixed and you do not have to worry about that problem for a long period of time, and of course they are insured and that is the good thing in this licensed plumbers as they are under a company if any negligence happens in their side the company is liable for all the cost but of course being licensed does not mean that there are no scammers, there are also licensed scammers, so better choose the right plumbing company so that you can avoid those scammers because scammers are just around and looking for their next target.

DIY Your Plumbing or Hire a Pro?

DIY Your Plumbing or Hire a Pro?

Know when your plumbing project is outside of your skill set.

Most homeowners are used to doing a little DIY plumbing from time to time. A clogged drain, a leaky faucet, installing a new shower head – these are fairly easy projects that can be completed in a matter of hours. But sometimes our home’s plumbing requires major work that goes beyond a novice’s skill level. You might not have confidence to complete a project, like replacing your toilet, or you may lack the necessary training to fix plumbing. Remember that a licensed plumber is trained and practiced, and some states require that a plumber undergo apprenticeships and take an exam in order to receive their licensing. Licensed plumbers have the knowledge and tools necessary to go beyond common leaks. If you’re planning a plumbing project, consider whether you should DIY or hire a professional plumber to do the work for you.

DIY vs. hiring a Professional Plumber

Most plumbers charge by the hour and the greatest expense tends to be labor costs, not materials. Of course your actual project costs will depend upon a variety of factors such as the scope of the project, the cost of materials, permitting, any other construction costs and labor. Depending upon the project, it may be most cost effective to DIY your plumbing, especially if the issue is outside of the walls and is considered minor. In fact, being a smart homeowner includes knowing how to make small adjustments or fixes to your home.  You will have to pay the costs of parts and tools, but depending on the complexity of your project these are minimal compared to the cost of hiring a professional plumber. With the DIY method, you can also take away a greater amount of confidence and pride with the fact that you can fix the things in your home, without the help of a professional.

On the other hand, tackling DIY projects that are outside your skill level or knowledge can result in mistakes that may, in fact, cause more harm than good. Hiring a professional can help minimize errors and maximize results. A plumbing expert will also be able to spot additional problems such as mold or polytbutylene piping. A plumber will also help you keep your plumbing project on schedule and budget. Some people prefer to take on plumbing repairs without any hired help, but it’s important to know when a project is outside of your skill range. To help you better evaluate the scope of your home improvement repair or remodel, the following are a few different projects to consider.

Regardless of choosing DIY or hiring a professional plumber, make sure you know how to shut off your water. You should know how to turn off the water valve for each fixture (for example, under the sink) but also know how to shut off your home’s main water. If you don’t know how to do this, pay attention to what your plumber is doing the next time he or she comes to your home.

IS COPPER PIPING BETTER?

Is Copper Piping Better?

The jury is still out when it comes to a definitive answer to the question of which type of pipe is better for plumbing in your home. Some experts still prefer to use copper pipe even though other types such as plastic CPVC and PEX are very popular.

Copper pipe has advantages over plastic pipe, and most plumbers and contractors agree: when it comes to the choice of whether or not to use copper pipe in your home, you should consider your specific needs, such as where you need to place the pipes and what kind of climate you live in. The advice of a trusted and reputable contractor is vital; they can offer you their expert opinion based on experience with all types of pipe and offer suggestions for your unique situation.

Copper piping has been used for plumbing for a very long time. Many contractors swear by it and love working with it because it is so easy to install, and fewer tools are needed. Again, preference seems to vary with different contractors.

Durability and flexibility are important features of copper pipe. In a natural disaster, copper pipe may flex and resist snapping, making it a safer choice for earthquake prone areas. Copper piping is also a good choice for the environment because it can be recycled.

Copper pipe is bacteriostatic, meaning that it is resistant to bacterial growth, which keeps the water in your home clean. It also resists corrosion more than other metals do. The down side of this is that copper can corrode; if it does, your water may have a metallic taste due to copper levels present in the water.

When it comes to weather and functioning properly outdoors, copper pipe is very resistant and durable. It is not affected or degraded by ultraviolet rays. If there is a fire, it releases no harmful toxic gasses due to its resistance to burning.

There are a few disadvantages to using copper pipe. As was mentioned, it can corrode, although it does resist corrosion. Copper has also become expensive, sometimes ten to fifteen times more expensive than PEX piping. Copper pipe can also freeze and break in extremely cold temperatures.

Some plumbers like the fact that copper pipe is joined together with solder which creates strong, reliable joints. Some prefer the ease of being able to turn off each segment of piping when using PEX pipes and don’t mind the extra tools required. It really depends on your area of the country and your plumbing contractor as to which type is best for your home.

If you are replacing pipe in your home or building a home and are considering copper pipe, do some research and be sure to check with builders and plumbing contractors in your area to be sure you have all the facts.

RUNNING TOILET, RUNNING WALLET

running toilet

Ok, so maybe your toilet isn’t exactly running away but if it is running at all you will be throwing money right down the drain.  If you are still confused about what I am referring to it is the sound of running water coming from your toilet.  No not right after you flushed it but a continual run that never seems to stop.  If you have this problem you could be wasting valuable dollars to your water and sewer bill.

Now there could be a number of reasons why this is happening. You could have a stuck or bad flush valve, a hardened flapper valve, or maybe just a bad adjustment in the lift chain.  I know many people get confused by this terminology but it’s really not that difficult to guess what parts I am speaking of.  This is usually the time when folks look up the number to a local plumber and pull out their wallets, We’re here to help you take care of this problem.  We will inspect your toilet for any leakage, worn parts, cracks or other factors to determine why your toilet is running, and repair it immediately.  Call us now.
